Importance Of Regular Measurement & Controlled Soil Temperature For Better Yield

Soil Temperature is one of the four main functions controlling plant growth in addition to water, nutrients, and light in the commencement of growth, rate of growth, and cessation of growth. It also greatly influences aeration and soil moisture content.

Soil temperature, light, and moisture all work together trigger seed germination. When the soil is cold, the seed may not germinate in the ground. If it does, it may be weak and lack of strength and vigor needed to develop properly and may be at greater risk of succumbing to
pests and disease.

Soil temperature controls the development of plumose and the radicle when the plant grows. It influences photosynthesis and respiration of the plant and also the growth of roots and absorption of nutrients by them.
The high temperature in soils is also not good. If the sun heats the soil surface with high temperatures it’s uncomfortable for most plants.
Soil temperature is one of the most important environmental factors known to affect the growth of microorganisms and the biological activity of soils which is critical to decomposing organic residues and recycling soil nutrients.

Many factors affect soil temperature :

Soil type: Sandy and loam-based soils generally heat up much more quickly than the heavier clay soils.

Weather and season: In a warm climate or summer, the soil has maximum chemical and physical activities than in a cold environment.

The slope of the land: Direction the soil faces affects the temperature of the soil.

Plant cover: Insulate from fast heating or cooling of the soil.

Soil Organic Matter: high soil organic matter buffers temperature extremes and initiates microbial activity and can deliver warmer conditions when the soil temperature drops.

Soil water: Wet soil will be cooler as it takes away a lot of energy to heat water. Wet soils take longer to heat up in summer that is well-drained

Microbial activity: Microbial activity can also generate heat. Therefore, high soil microbial activity ensures warmer soil during cold temperatures
Most often Soil Temperature is not measured and given required attention though it plays one of the most important roles in microbial function in the soil, which in turn drives plant growth.

With optimum microbial activity, farmers can improve soil physical conditions, which in turn influences the plant growth leading to better water movement, air movement, and nutrient movement. If the soil temperature is regularly measured and controlled, farmers can have better quality and quantity of yield.

Criticality Of Optimum Water Content for Crops

Excess Or Less Moisture Is The Most Detrimental Factor In Farming 

From the germination of seeds to the process of photosynthesis by which plants prepare their food, every stage of the life cycle of the plants, the role of water is the most critical factor. 

Plants take in nutrients from the soil only in a solution form. It acts as a reagent in various reactions in plant cells. Water also maintains the plant structure by providing the appropriate pressure to the plant tissues. Soil water thus is essential for the survival of the plants.

Without the proper balance of water in the soil, the plant is malnourished and physically weak. If the soil has excess water, the plant roots can rot or deteriorate the development of healthy roots, thus, decreases its ability to take up water and enough oxygen through its roots. It is critical especially at the growing stage of the plant. 

The plant needs not only optimum moisture but also a proper balance of water and large quantities of oxygen in the soil for respiration. Less than 10% oxygen in soil limits the root growth of most plants. Oxygen deficiency is one of the most influential environmental factors causing stress, reduced growth, injury, and in some, it causes the death of the plants.

When soil does not have enough water, plants get wilted. In extreme cases, Permanent Wilting Point reaches when there is not sufficient water available to the plant for a while. A dry environment will pull moisture out of the plant and insufficient water will prevent nutrients from reaching the ends of the plant. Wilting diminishes the plant’s ability to transpire and grow. Permanent wilting may lead to plant death. 

By maintaining optimum moisture, plants will get enough water and oxygen from the soil and automatically results in better growth and improve the quality & quantity of yield. Most importantly, it will increase the profit and reduce the production cost of the growers. Therefore, the need of the hour is that the growers must optimize their water use efficiency.

Practicing traditional methods for irrigation causes challenges like drought, excess evaporation, salinization, groundwater depletion, and lack of access to water reserves. These factors are getting served in India day by day. 

12% of the Indian population is already living in the “Day Zero” situation. The Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) report states that by 2030 (hardly 10 years from now), India’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people. 

The World Bank predicts that by 2032, around 60 percent of aquifers in the country will be in a critical state. (Ref. India’s Groundwater Crisis: The Consequences of Unsustainable Pumping Caleb Gorton, Research Assistant, Global Food and Water Crises Research Programme,2015)
